  • Savour @ Pan Asian, ITC Grand Chola, Chennai

  • The new Pan Asian at the ITC Grand Chola, Chennai, is one of the most ambitious restaurants to have come up in 2013. The good thing is that it lives up to expectations.  Eating-out trend reports in India routinely peg “Indian”, “Chinese” and “Italian” as the most popular cuisines in the business--- in that order.

But if there was to be a more current survey, in the metros, and at least capturing the top end of the market it would be quite clear that the category of cuisine that is growing the fastest in the Indian restaurantscape is, not Chinese or Indianised Chinese, but pan Asian.

Asian flavours have been trendy the world over for a couple of years. In India too, fairly authentic and sophisticated Thai, Japanese, regional Chinese and surprisingly Korean are cuisines have seen increased popularity in the “lifestyle” genre of restaurants. And this is a space that is growing. Pan Asian at the ITC Grand Chola in Chennai is clearly a restaurant aimed at tapping this market.

But if you have been used to the brand in other cities, sit up and take notice: This is unlike any of the other Pan Asians at other ITC hotels in other cities and certainly one of the best looking and clearly designed restaurants to have come up anywhere in the country recently.
