  • HC checks out the glitzy new Cavalli Café in New Delhi

    SUBANI SAXENA

Catering to the high end food lovers, Cavalli Café is ideally located on the ground floor in DLF Emporio, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi right next to Roberto Cavalli boutique. The café is a true reflection of the Cavalli style-- complete with the animal print upholstery, animal print lampshades hung upside, personalized wine labels and photos of the designer with various celebrities covering the wall.

The café and the boutique are inter-connected with additional seating in the atrium of the mall, with comfortable and fashionable chairs and sofas—even though we found the layout a little too spread out and wonder how the kitchen will be able to service customers seated outside satisfactorily (especially in winters or if there is a rush), given that the food needs to travel from the kitchen, across the entire restaurant to a bit of the lobby outside and then to the atrium.

In keeping with its designer image, Cavalli café is a chic, dripping-with-style space. But discounting the seating outside, the interiors are strictly more lounge like than bearing the informality of a café. (Note: the music needs to be more lively and cheerful too!). On the other hand, we couldn’t fault the food at all. Once again the presentations are far more sophisticated than a café merits and if you find those delightful Italian cafes charming with their heartiness, geniality and mama’s cooking, don’t go looking for those attributes here. However, the taste of the dishes is spot on and the fancy presentation are indeed aesthetic.

I start with a glass of cold iced tea and moved on to another house special – the beetroot vinaigrette cold salad, served with feta and arugula. The flavours are clean, the sweetness of the beet is balanced by the tartness of the dressing and it is a beautiful presentation. The Caesar salad here comes with a twist:  Chicken served on satay sticks instead of being shredded into strips. But it is tender and quite flavour. Both the recipes and presentation are standardized in Milan and followed strictly here and most of the ingredients are imported.

The pizzas steal the show with their super thin crusts—the thinnest we’ve come across (even in Italy). The Diavola pizza turns out to be divine with mouth-watering pepperoni, while the Contadina is a scrumptious vegetarian pizza. The lasagna tradizonale is hearty with lamb that melts in the mouth. A must try.

Last but definitely not the least, hot chocolate foam with a rum granita is an amazing dessert: a combination of hot and cold that leaves you speechless and your mouth bursting with flavour. An absolutely divine dessert that you can come back here for.
